One person is dead after a crash on State Highway 6 near Kingston early Tuesday.
Police say a member of the public reported the single-vehicle crash, at the southern end of Lake Whakatipu, about 4.30am.
Police confirmed the vehicle’s sole occupant died at the scene.
A resident tells Allied Press the road had a couple of dips and corners, but it was not known for being dangerous.
‘‘There have been some other crashes on the road in the past, and there was a good frost this morning [of the crash],’’ the resident says.
The highway was closed for several hours but reopened about 11am, with traffic banking up in both directions.
At the time of going to print a police spokeswoman told Mountain Scene they were not ready to name the victim.
A police investigation into the incident is ongoing.
