Q’towners up for Otago Sports gongs

Snowboarding coach Sean Thompson’s in the running to make it two from two in this year’s Otago Sports Awards.

The Aussie-born snowboard slopestyle and Big Air coach, whose athletes include Queenstowner Tiarn Collins and Wānaka’s Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, was last year named coach of the year, and has just been named a finalist in the same category this year.

He’s up against Dave Ross (hockey) and Brent Matahere (basketball).

Queenstown ski racer Alice Robinson’s nominated in the sportswoman of the year category, up against Sadowski-Synnott and netball player Kate Heffernan, while fellow local alpine skier Ruby Star Andrews is a finalist in the junior sportswoman of the year, along with swimmer Erika Fairweather and cricketer Eden Carson.

The awards, presented by Otago Polytechnic, will be announced in Dunedin on June 9.
