Aussies bowled over

Three veteran Queenstown cricketers helped their New Zealand over-60s teams win recent inter-state tournaments in Geelong, Australia.

Owie O’Connell, 66, played in the winning NZ Division 4 side, peaking with a handy 36 not out.

In the Division 5 tournament, John Cushen, 72, took 4 for 20 in the final against Victoria, and Hal Shaw, 62, though picked for his fielding, scored a valuable 23 not out in one game and hit the winning runs in another.

Cushen, who received a new right hip four-and-a-half months earlier, was also his team’s vice-captain.

He attributes part of their success — they were unbeaten in four games — to ‘‘a good pre-tournament get-together in Hal’s and my
hotel room’’.
