This art work of super-sized teddy bear, Blue Ted, features in an exhibition, entitled ‘SAFE’, exploring illusions of safety, opening tonight at Starkwhite Queenstown gallery.

Based on her first teddy bear, the work’s by London-based Kiwi Amanda Newall, who’s collaborated for the exhibition with German-American Olav Westphalen.

A professor of drawing in Bremen, Germany, he’s depicted billionaire bunkers rumoured to be popping up in the Queenstown-Lakes area in his project, Bolthole Down.

Both artists are giving short talks tonight at 6pm.

Westphalen’s also presenting a practical drawing workshop at Starkwhite this Saturday, from 10am till 12pm, and Newall and her cousin, author Megan Dunn, are presenting ‘a creative work shop to tempt the inner child’ at the same time on Sunday — to book a place for either, email [email protected]

Meanwhile, tonight’s exhibition opening’s also part of the monthly ‘First Thursdays’ event, from 5 till 7pm, which also includes four other CBD galleries — Milford Galleries, Romer, Artbay and Lightworx.

Artbay’s upstairs gallery’s launching an exhibition by New Plymouth painter, Jasmine Middlebrook, featuring ‘‘fables and the realm of the fantastic’’.

Milford Galleries is focusing on stills from Māori artist Lisa Reihana’s , Ihi, while Romer’s debuting a new photographic work by Stephan Romer, Hooker Lake.
