Finding her space

Dunedin solo artist Calla promises to take Queenstown audiences on a musical journey before she moves to Auckland.

The 27-year-old will play at the Sherwood this Saturday, and has been very busy of late.

She was selected for the 2022 DMMF South Island Arts Excellence Award and was a 2023 Emerging Artist.

‘‘Queenstown’s a really special place for me, so I’m really looking forward to being on tour,’’ Calla says.

Calla says she’s been writing a lot of new songs, and has about two albums’ worth of material to record.

‘‘I enjoy the storytelling part of songwriting, there’s something really timeless about it,’’ she says.

‘‘The best songwriting takes you and the listener on a journey where they don’t know what to expect.’’

Calla’s music is a mixture of the electronic and operatic, and she either performs solo or with a band.

‘‘I love both approaches,’’ she says.

‘‘When I’m on my own, it can be really empowering, but working with others brings a lot of energy.’’

Calla admits it can be sometimes difficult to ‘‘find herself’’ in the songwriting process.

‘‘You need to find your own space, especially when you’re touring, and it can be hard to make it work,’’ she says.

‘‘But being able to do what I love is so rewarding.’’

Calla says the Queenstown audience should expect her music to ‘‘fill a room’’.

‘‘Authenticity is one of the most important things,’’ she says.

Calla will soon be moving up to Auckland, where she plans to be based for her career.

She says she’s looking forward to new experiences, but wants to create something really memorable for her Queenstown audience.
