GY fishing comp to spawn tall tales

All decent-sized salmon, rainbow and brown trout lurking near the head of Lake Whakatipu, beware, tomorrow is the 42nd annual Glenorchy Fishing Competition.

More than 120 locals of all angling ability are expected to be dipping a line at this year’s event, one of the town’s largest annual fundraisers
and social get-togethers.

Proceeds from this year’s comp are going to the Glenorchy Civil Defence Community Hub.

Community hub and event organiser Sonya Porteous says the money will be used to get the hub “set up in readiness for if it’s needed”.

Participants must have a current fishing licence and registrations will not be accepted after 10am.

Anglers have until 10am to enter, and must weigh their best catch of the day — from lake shore or boat — between 2pm and 4pm sharp at the Glenorchy Community Hall.

Fishing is confined to the head of Lake Whakatipu from Black Gorge to the Dart and Rees rivers.

“It’s always a good day out, a social outing for the community that gets all the kids out and about,” Porteous says.

Entry is $20 for adults, $10 for juniors, $5 for children and $45 for a family.

Entry forms are available on the ‘Glenorchy Fishing Competition’ Facebook page, or by emailing [email protected], or
if you happen to be at the Glenorchy pub up until the night before.
