Versatile Christchurch performer Rakuto Kurano, 23, presents his new summer concert series to Queenstown audiences this Wednesday afternoon.

Kurano’s well known to Central Otago concert lovers as the artist-in-residence at Wānaka’s Aspiring Village.

Te Atamira’s one of three venues Kurano has chosen to premiere Adventure to Ruby Island.

His programme — presented by Magic Carpet Music Trust — is packed with his own compositions, including the Radio NZ Concert favourite, Fantail in Tokyo.

He’s an extremely versatile multi-instrumentalist, playing violin, viola, baroque violin, baroque viola, piano, keyboard, harpsichord, percussion and musical saw.

He supports other young composers and musicians by commissioning new works from them and includes music students from smaller communities in his performances.

He’ll be playing with five other musicians on Wednesday in Queenstown and after his tour ends, will head for the recording studio.

Te Atamira, January 17, 3.30pm. Tickets: via tewahitoi.nz
