Up for the battle: Senior Wakatipu High 1st XV players include, from left, Connor McIsaac,Thomas Hulsman and Ty Harris

For the first time, Wakatipu High’s 1st XV rugby side’s going to mix it this season with the top rugby schools in Otago and Southland.

Starting this Saturday, they’ll be playing in the top six-team division of the Otago Schools Rugby Championship, after Alexandra’s Dunstan High opted to drop to the next tier as they have a young team this year.

Manager Steve McIsaac says ‘‘there’s been a good core of boys who’ve stayed together for the last five years, which has given us the numbers and the confidence to go and play division one’’.

‘‘We’ve probably got the biggest number of Year 13s we’ve ever had in a 1st XV.’’

The team finished seventh in last year’s comp.

Year 13 second-five Ty Harris notes some of the players have been together since primary school.

‘‘We’ll push ourselves as far as we can, I think we’ll do pretty well.’’

Year 13 first-five Connor McIsaac adds: ‘‘I’m excited, I reckon we’re up for it.’’

They kick off their season tomorrow by playing King’s High School in Dunedin.
