Young Queenstown road cyclist Eli Tregidga clocked up his best result last Saturday — then headed off that night to join one of Europe’s leading under-19 teams.
Still just 17, he won the U19 title in the elite road cycling national champs in Tokoroa, cleaning up his rivals in a sprint finish.
His time for the 106-kilometre race was 2 hours 48 minutes.
The ex-Wakatipu High student and former Southland U17 development team member was selected late last year to train and race with the Netherlands’ Gepla-Watersley R&D U19 men’s team.
Eli left last weekend to join their training camp in the Spanish port city of Alicante.
He’ll then be based at the Watersley Sports & Talentpark in Sittard, a residential campus for international and national athletes.
