Two young Queenstown athletes were honoured at the Central Otago Sports Awards, held in Wānaka, last Friday night.

Talented teen rower Marley King Smith (pictured), 17, the national under-18 single sculls champion, who’s booked his slot with the New Zealand U19
men’s quad to compete at the world U19 champs in France this August, was named junior sportsman of the year, while the ‘Junior Spirit of
Central’ award went to fellow Wakatipu High athlete Siena Mackley.

The 15-year-old, who’s also a junior netball umpire, recently won the U18 women’s 3000m title at the NZ track and field champs in Wellington — last August, at only 14, she won the U20 women’s division of the NZ mountain running champs at Queenstown’s Deer Park Heights.

Queenstown’s new international netball umpire Sasha McLeod was named Central Otago’s top official, while Wakatipu High rowing coach John Morrison won coach of the year.

Meantime, Wānaka’s Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, 22, was named sportswoman of the year, and won the Bruce Grant Memorial Award, while Olympian biathlete Campbell Wright, of Lake Hawea, won sportsman of the year.
