Eight Whakatipu netball teams take the court tonight to battle it out in the Wakatipu Netball senior A-grade and premier semi-finals.

In the senior A semis, Arrowtown Rugby Club (ARC) Bella Cucina will play ARC AJ Saville in one game, with Hornets going up against Wakatipu High School’s (WHS) 10A Gold in the other.

In the premier grade, Queen Bees take on WHS A, and ARC Lone Star play Legends.

The winners of each semi will then progress to finals, being played this Saturday.

Wakatipu Netball senior sub-committee member Kay O’Connell says in previous years, the final’s been held mid-week, but she’s hoping to see a bigger turnout courtside on Saturday.

‘‘We wanted to put it on a Saturday, and include all the teams in the competition, because it just didn’t feel like finals last year.

‘‘So we’re hoping to get the spectators along.’’

O’Connell, who coaches WHS A, says they’ve taken out the comp for the past two years — if they make it a three-peat, ‘‘that’ll be a new
[record]’’.

But given Queen Bees have only dropped one game all season, it’ll likely be a tight game.

O’Connell says moving forward, the competition could benefit from more court space to enable a broader competition.

‘‘Hopefully we can get these two extra courts that are going be built, and we can then increase our teams.’’
