Look who's back: Former SkyCity Stampede captain Matt Schneider's making a couple of cameo appearances for his ice hockey team

Queenstown’s SkyCity Stampede ice hockey team returns to home ice this week end for the first time in six weeks.

They’re playing Dunedin’s Phoenix Thunder in what coach Cam Frear’s expecting to be two tight games.

‘‘Dunedin’s a really good team, they have a stronger team at home, but I’m sure they’ll [all] make the short trip to Queenstown to come play.’’

Frear’s pretty happy with how his team’s travelling, having split their double-header against top-of-the-table Botany Swarm in Auckland last weekend, despite missing several players.

Considering Swarm are likely finalists, Frear’s delighted Stampede’s won three of their four round-robin encounters.

However, to ensure a home final he’s keen they win all their games from now on.

A highlight this weekend will be welcoming back former Stampede captain Matt Schneider, who’s on a brief visit from overseas.

Puck drop tomorrow and Saturday, at the Queenstown Ice Arena, is 7pm.
