So close.

The strength of junior golf in the Whakatipu was on display last week when the Otago Junior Boys’ golf team came within a whisker of an upset win at the New Zealand Junior Interprovincial Champs, at the Cambridge Club.

The team, comprising Queenstowners Jan Ebbinge, Nico Cheifetz, Noah Novacek, Josh Harris, Ricky Kang and Dunedin’s Kairangi Koni, was pipped at the post by hot favourites Auckland in the final, by 3.5 to 2.5.

Ricky and Noah won their matches while Josh finished all square and Jan was edged by one.

Otago won all five matches leading into the final, including an upset win over Canterbury, with the key being the consistency on display from
all the boys.

Ricky and Noah were outstanding, winning all six matches, while Josh was unbeaten, with three wins and three halves.

Following the champion ships, Jan and Ricky played in the latest Charles Tour event among a top pro field in Tauranga, finishing 35th and 39th, respectively.
