Tussle: Queenstown Rovers' Junior Violato, right, scraps for possession with a Queens Park opponent in Queenstown last month

Queenstown’s top men’s Rovers team’s hosting a special derby against Wānaka tomorrow.

It’s a first-round knockout game for New Zealand’s famous Chatham Cup, modelled on England’s FA Cup, which made its debut 100
years ago.

Queenstown Association Football Club president Simon Couldstone is stoked to have drawn this game.

‘‘We want to get behind the boys and make a day of it and use it as an opportunity to bring the whole club together, and particularly show off the pinnacle of the club to the junior members, both players and parents.’’

The club’s putting on some pre-match hospitality at the Queenstown Events Centre, from 1.30pm, for supporters and sponsors, and outlining its vision for the future.

Ahead of the opening whistle, at 2pm, the Rovers players will run onto Sir John Davies Oval through a guard of honour formed by junior club members.

The team’s had a mixed season so far in the Dunedin-based ODT Southern Football premiership league, winning three games, including beating Wānaka at home 4-2, but also losing three.

‘‘Those we’ve lost, it’s because we’ve had a bit of a mashed-up team,’’ Couldstone says.
