Reversing buyer ban not yet a National policy

The Labour government’s ban on foreigners, except Aussies and Singaporeans, buying residential property was unpopular in many Queenstown quarters when it was introduced in 2018.

However, the National Party is yet to commit to reversing it, deputy leader Nicola Willis (pictured) says.

Speaking during a recent visit, she says it’s ‘‘something we’re looking at carefully’’.

‘‘We recognise the fact many New Zealanders don’t want to feel they’re competing with overseas investors to buy a home, because we’ve had one of the most unaffordable housing markets in the world, and it’s got a lot worse in recent years.

‘‘At the same time, our view is having investors from around the world prepared to bring their money here, and invest it in new things, is good for the country.’’

Meanwhile, she says she’s a ‘‘huge fan’’ of the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust, saying its innovation and work is ‘‘incredibly impressive’’.

‘‘If we’re in government, we want to power them up.’’
