Reaching for the STARS

From reforestation to search and rescue, volunteering and the arts, Wakatipu High’s Year 9 students got a crash course in some of Queenstown’s community organisations recently.

Part of the STARS peer mentoring programme, the ‘community adventure’, run in conjunction with the Graeme Dingle Foundation, gives Year 9 students the chance to explore and learn more about services provided in the Whakatipu.

STARS coordinator Melissa Haarer says the school is indebted to all 14 groups and organisations that participated this year — they included Mana Tāhuna, Whakatipu Youth Trust, Te Atamira, Rotary Youth Services and Pivotal Point neurodiversity services — pictured is the latter’s founder and chief executive Lisa Leftley speaking to students.
