About 2000 trees were planted by almost 150 volunteers on the Sawpit Gully track last Sunday, during the fourth Arrowtown Beech Party planting day.

Karl Walker, of the Arrowtown Choppers, says to date they’ve planted 8000 trees in the area, aiming to increase that to 12,000 before the end of next year.

Walker says they’re ‘‘super lucky’’ to have a huge number of sponsors, including Trees ThatCount, The Stephenson Fund, ORC EcoFund, New Zealand Trails, and host of local businesses and organisations.

The next Beech Parties will be held next April and October, which will see the link between the three strands of remnant beech forest completed, while over the coming summer the Choppers will clear more wilding pines, maintain existing planting sites and prepare for future
