Big fundraiser

A mega-fundraiser to help out devastated communities in the North Island’s being held in Queenstown later this month.

A collab between the local Lions and Rotary clubs and Altrusa, six hours of entertainment’s planned at the Events Centre on Sunday, March 26.

RockFormation Charitable Trust will provide beats for the day, though the door’s open for any other local musos or community groups to get involved, while there’ll also be games for the young and young-at-heart, including gumboot throwing and three-legged-races.

Local Lions president Michael White (pictured) says the idea came from watching Cyclone Gabrielle devastate the North Island on TV, but realising organising a fundraiser takes time and a lot of logistics.

Given his club’s already working with the others through the Whakatipu Care Trust, aiming to provide a community-funded hospice facility somewhere in the Basin to provide respite care for patients, coming together again for cyclone relief was a ‘‘natural progression’’, he says.

There’ll be Eftpos machines and donation buckets floating around during the event, which runs from 11am till 5pm — White notes some games will have a charge to raise as much money as possible.
