A section of Gorge Road’s about to close till ‘‘mid-2023’’ as work on Queenstown’s new arterial road progresses.
Council property and infrastructure GM Peter Hansby, who’s also a Kā Huanui a Tāhuna board member, says Gorge Rd, between Weaver Street and Stanley St, will close from October 25 till mid-2023 for a new layout to be created.
It’ll reopen over next month’s Queenstown Marathon weekend, and again between December 24 and January 8, he says.
Hansby acknowledges the closure’s ‘‘likely to cause additional disruption’’, particularly during peak travel times, but says by
starting now the work will be largely finished before next year’s ski season.
Underground services will be upgraded before the road’s rebuilt, creating a new intersection that includes safe pedestrian crossing
points.
A detour will be in place via Robins Rd and Memorial St for vehicles heading to and from Queenstown’s town centre.
Pedestrian access will be maintained through the worksite along Gorge Rd, along with access for residents and business owners.
Hansby recommends people allow extra time to travel into Queenstown, and leave earlier or later to avoid peak traffic.
‘‘For those who can, please consider carpooling with a friend, colleague, or neighbour, take public transport, or get that heart rate
up and hop on your bike or walk.’’
Due to an increase in the number of vehicles going past Queenstown Primary School and the fire station, Hansby’s reminding people to slow down, stay alert and follow signs.
‘‘We know these disruptions can be challenging and we’re grateful for the support, patience, and open dialogue so far.
‘‘The construction underway in Queenstown’s town centre is significant but it won’t last forever.
‘‘Overall the programme is ahead of schedule and will be worth it.’’
While there’ll also be a ‘‘temporary loss of parking’’ along Gorge Rd, 130 new spaces are available at the new Lakeview carpark, off Hay St, while a temporary carpark off Stanley St’s hoped to be up and running by Christmas.
