Surfing the breeze

The Southern Lakes Windriders Club opened its arms to new and returning members recently with an open day at the Frankton Beach, marking the unofficial start of the summer season.

Club commodore Sue Bradley (pictured) says they see a range of experience levels — the recent event attracted about 20 club members, and another 20-odd checking it out.

The weekly Wednesday sessions are more of a club night focusing on beginners to intermediates, Bradley says, ‘‘but it’s pretty social, sometimes the more advanced [members] will come down to have a beer and watch’’.

While there aren’t fixed dates for most upcoming events, due to the unpredictability of the weather, Bradley’s hoping to stage a downwind
ride from Glenorchy to Pigeon Island at some stage.

She says the club aims to hold weekly sessions from January till March at different spots around the Whakatipu.
