Excitement’s already building for this summer’s battle between Queenstown and Christchurch in the popular Irish sport of hurling.

Organiser and local team founder Declan ‘Diesel’ Malone last week confirmed the fixture will be played at the Queenstown Rec Ground on February 25.

‘‘This year is going to be massive, I think — so many people want to be involved.’’

Pictured from left are Malone, sponsors Joe Daly (Modbox Queenstown) and Adam Nagy (Morrison’s Irish Pub), player Mark Connaughton with his 16-month-old son, Valentina, and captain Niall Quinn.

Christchurch won the first encounter, but Queenstown’s won the past two, and currently holds the newly-minted Lindis Pass Cup.

Malone, who says both teams’ ranks will be filled out with Wellington players, classifies hurling as ‘‘the oldest and fastest field sport in the
world’’.

The main charity for the day will again be St John.
