After initially just asking The Hills for sharpeners to repair its greens mower, the Arrowtown course is now helping Glenorchy Golf Club improve its picturesque nine-holer on an ongoing basis.

Club president Damian Orman says thanks to locals’ help and sponsorship, they’ve majorly improved their fairways — once so bad, balls were lost in them.

But when they found their greens mower needed $6000 worth of repairs, it was beyond what a club with $10 green fees could afford, so they reached out to The Hills.

Beyond fixing their mower’s reels, The Hills’ trainee green keeper Innes Kensington also completely revamped their greens over two 12-hour days and two return visits, and gave the club a maintenance programme to follow.

“The greens were in a sorry state,” he says.

“We will probably go back in March and do another round of sanding to build on what I have done.”

He’s also trying to fix Glenorchy’s irrigation which hasn’t been used for about 10 years.

Orman says the Hills’ assistance and offer of long-term support ensures the club has “decent, playable greens … it’s like the icing on the cake”.
