Last year was a record-breaker at Queenstown Airport, with total passenger numbers surpassing the 2019 peak.

In all, 2,410,615 people moved through the Frankton airport — 822,904 of those internationals — up from 2,393,31 in 2019.

The busiest month at the airport last year was January, when 238,786 people were recorded, while the quietest was May (148,089).

Destination Queenstown boss Mat Woods says part of the international growth is the strong connectivity between Queenstown and Australia.

While the resort welcomed back the Chinese market last year, Woods says another growth market’s the United States in part, he believes, because of the exchange rate.

‘‘You’re talking about 61 cents to the dollar, it’s so strong, so Americans are really enjoying coming to visit.’’

Hotel occupancy for last month was also ‘‘well up’’, he says, sitting about 85%.
