Tapped out: Queenstown's Alan Kirker, left, with business partner Iraj Barabi at the Frankton marina in November

Queenstown Marina’s minority shareholder admits he’s no longer managing the Frankton facility.

Queenstowner Alan Kirker’s been ‘Mr Marina’ for the past 10 years or so, and since the $20 million, 85-berth stage one opened, just before Covid struck, has effectively been managing it.

‘‘I was there just by default,’’ he says — his business partner Iraj Barabi, who owns 93.33% of marina owner Lakes Marina Projects, is mainly based in the United States.

‘‘Somebody had to do it,’’ Kirker says.

‘‘There was nobody to do it, and we couldn’t get a manager at that time — Covid struck, and what have you.’’

However, following discussions with Barabi, he says anchor tenant, jetboat operator KJet, is now managing the marina and property services company Colliers is handling leasing, which suits him just fine, even though he remains a shareholder/director.

‘‘It’s quite good I’m not getting hounded every day.’’

Mountain Scene last November revealed, ahead of the official opening of stage one, the developers were committing to a second stage of about 100 berths.
