Timeless ‘love’ story to play out in A’town

It’s a timeless story.

Boy meets girl, disguised as boy.

Boy falls for girl/boy and questions his sexuality.

Boy owes money, is kidnapped, and in danger of suffering an agonising death.

Boy loses girl.

And then boy becomes king.

It’s a tale being played out at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall in September when Remarkable Theatre brings to life Blackadder: The Golden Age.

A mash-up of the best characters and scenes from the much-loved TV programme, the play will transport Lord Edmund Blackadder, Baldrick, Lord Percy, Queenie and other wonderfully-ridiculous characters from the small screen to the stage.

Being directed by Invercargill theatre scene doyenne Angela Newell, who also directed ’Allo ’Allo in 2014, Remarkable Theatre committee member Melanie Grindell says the show promises to be ‘‘heaps of fun’’.

‘‘It’s a wonderful script compiled from the TV episodes … it’s the 40th anniversary of Blackadder [and] it’s still really relevant, and people still find it really funny.’’

Auditions are being held this coming Saturday for the play, with about eight main roles and a variety of smaller supporting ones.

Blackadder: The Golden Age will hit the stage from September 7 to 16.
