Taking on Blackadder

Perennial Queenstown actor Marty Newell has nabbed the lead role in Remarkable Theatre’s upcoming production of Blackadder — The Golden Age.

Newell, who is also Showbiz Queenstown’s president, has been cast as Lord Edmund Blackadder Esq, and will be joined by Danny Dukinfield, as Baldrick.

Kate (Bob) will be played by PJ Cameron, Justin Abbiss will be Percy, while Melanie Grindell and Guillaume Henry will be Mrs and Mr Pants, respectively — Henry is also Geoffrey Piddle, ‘Torturer’, and ‘Guard 2’.

David Oakley is hitting the stage as Bishop of Bath & Wells, George Cabral de Souza will play Dr Leech and Lord Whiteadder, Phena Byrne has been cast as Lady Farrow and Wisewoman, and Andy Bell — fresh from the lead role in Showbiz Queenstown’s season of Little Shop of
Horrors
— is Simon Partridge and ‘Guard 1’.

Mike Legge’s taking on Lord Melchett, Nicky Busst will be Queen Elizabeth I, Victoria Mills is ‘Nursie’, Natalia Brown’s ‘Mollie’ and Ali Board’s Lady Whiteadder, while Simon Ross will be both Freddie Frobisher and Lord Flashheart, and Greg Dorn will play Kate’s father and Prince Ludwig.

More than 30 people turned up to last month’s auditions for the show, being staged at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall from September 7 to
16 — they’re now recruiting for more than 40 behind-the-scenes roles.
