Wakatipu High school leaver Frida Rylev has won the annual $1000 David Geddes Memorial Scholarship to put towards her tertiary studies.

The scholarship’s funded by Queenstown’s Returned and Services’ Association (RSA) and the family of the late David Geddes, who helped revive the branch in 2005.

Frida, 18, is pictured at last month’s presentation with, from left, RSA branch president Phil Wilson, her dad Martin, Geddes’ widow, Maryann Geddes, and Wakatipu High deputy principal Lee Hiestand.

Frida won the design category for two years running for the ‘excellence showing off’ exhibition at Arrowtown’s Lakes District Museum and helped design a poster aimed at getting young people involved in last year’s council elections.

As lead prefect for Wakatipu High’s Wanagatanga (peer support) Council, she was involved in organising anti-bullying initiative Pink Shirt Day as well as Pride Week and Red Nose Day.

She’s attending Otago Polytechnic next year to study for a Bachelor of Communication Design.
