Long-running event’s new picnic venue

This year’s Waitangi Day Reggae Picnic’s bringing together the best of both worlds.

The annual event, last held at Queenstown’s St Omer Park in 2021, is aimed at celebrating both te Tiriti and Bob Marley’s birthday, which fall on February 6.

Organiser and musical guest Tyrone Morehu, also known as DJ Pops, is encouraging Queenstowners to bring picnics to the Queenstown Rec Ground on Waitangi Day and either relax and enjoy the atmosphere, or ‘‘skank the day away’’.

The event will feature a range of reggae artists from across Aotearoa who come to play at their own expense each year, playing a mix of originals through to contemporary sounds.

Morehu’s been involved with the event for over 20 years, but took over running it about eight years ago.

‘‘Listening to reggae and celebrating Waitangi Day … with it being a public holiday what else could you ask for?’’

Waitangi Day Reggae Picnic, noon till 6pm, tickets, $5, via Ticketfairy; kids under 16, free.
