Exploring wellness: Nadi Wellness Centre director Sandi Murphy

A workshop in Queenstown tomorrow’s aiming to remove stigma and help heal trauma.

Hosted by Gorge Road’s Nadi Wellness Centre, the three-hour workshop, ‘Understanding Trauma — New solutions for troubled times’, gives people who believe they’re carrying trauma, or living/working with someone else who might be, a chance to discuss the issues and receive expert support.

Organiser Sandi Murphy, Nadi’s director, has invited specialist functional GP Dr Tracy Chandler, whom she’s known for years, and psychotherapist Gerry Pyves, author of Touching Trauma — Building Resilience, to share their knowledge.

Based in Timaru, Chandler will discuss symptoms caused by trauma, testing and healing, and the wide variety of types.

‘‘I’m … expecting people will be surprised about how many different types of trauma there are, for example, nutritional deficiencies are seen as ‘trauma’ by the body,’’ she says.

‘‘That may sound overwhelming, but thankfully I have heaps of simple strategies.’’

Pyves will discuss different ways to think about trauma, and teach his ‘psycho-tactile’ self-soothing exercise.

Murphy says she’s excited to be able to host both speakers, and have the wellness centre be a pillar for those struggling in Queenstown.

‘‘It’s great to contribute to the bigger picture — optimal wellbeing … especially with everything going on.’’

The workshop runs from 3pm till 6pm, tickets cost $33 via bit.ly/3yCT82j
