Celebrating spring blooms in A’town

Blooms, buds and a bit of baking will be the order of the day at tomorrow’s Arrowtown Spring Flower Show.

Although cancelled last year due to Covid, the show, about to mark its 99th year, has a long history of chasing away the winter blues, organiser Wendy Clarke says.

Always held at the town’s Athenaeum Hall, Clarke says it’s been well supported and, given the growth of the community and Arrowtown
School’s involvement, ‘‘it’s just got great heart’’.

‘‘There are a lot of keen gardeners here, but we have these long, hard winters and it’s a really a celebration of spring,’’ she says.

Along with blooms from across the district, the show also displays arts and crafts and baking, with qualified judges deciding the best of each bunch.

Clarke says it’s aimed at everyone from pre-schoolers to senior members of the community, with cups to be handed out for winners of the
various categories.

‘‘It’s such a lovely community event and all of our profits go back to the community as well.’’

Entries can be taken to the Athenaeum Hall between 1pm and 8pm today, while the show’s open to the public from 1pm till 5pm tomorrow.

Schedules are available from Arrowtown’s Lakes District Museum.
