Artist collective returns

A group of Central Otago artists will open their first exhibition in two years at Arrowtown’s Lakes District Museum today.

Indigo comprises Ranfurly’s Luke Anthony, who carves life-like, life-size sculptures of New Zealand native birds from salvaged NZ timbers, contemporary Kiwi artist Shaun Burdon, who paints, prints and makes sculptures, painter and sculptor Judy Cockeram, Cromwell landscape artist Rachel Hirabayashi, Bannockburn’s Megan Huffadine, also a painter and sculptor, painter Jillian Porteous, ceramic artist Lynne Wilson and Central Otago landscape artist Nigel Wilson, showing new works including painting, sculpture and ceramics and will be joined by Wānaka’s Martin Hill and Philippa Jones.

Since 1994 the pair have focused their work on emulating nature’s design, creating and photographing ephemeral environmental sculptures in nature, that return to nature — in the end, all that’s left of the sculpture is a photo of it.

For the Indigo exhibition, they’ve selected one work each from three significant projects, Guardians, Fine Line and the BBC’s Nature & Us.

Museum director David Clarke says he’s excited to host the Indigo collective again.

‘‘This amazingly-talented group of artists continually reinvent themselves, with new ideas and styles.’’

Indigo runs till November 13.
