Art event goes quarterly

Queenstown art-lovers’initiative, First Thursdays —involving six CBD galleries showing off special exhibitions from 5 till 7pm on the first Thursday of each month — is going quarterly after tonight.

For tonight’s First Thursdays, Milford Galleries is showing new solo shows by painter Amanda Gruenwald and sculptor Hannah Kidd, who creates life-sized animals from rustic metal materials.

Kidd is giving an artist’s talk at the gallery at 5.30pm.

Starkwhite, also in Earl St, highlights new works by Australian artist Paul Davies, who’s giving an artist’s talk at 6.30pm.

Nearby, Romer Gallery will again be showcasing large-format landscape photographs by Stephan Romer, who’s just triumphed at the 2023 London Photography Awards; a work which won platinum in two categories will be on display.

Artbay is displaying works by landscape painter Michael Moore and figurative artist Ilya Volykhine, whose art is said to be ‘‘darkly comic’’.

And Lightworx is showing light sculptures by Max Patte and works by Tim Christie exploring light as a medium.
