Sparkling choral concert in Arrowtown

Central Otago Regional Choir’s latest concert, in Arrowtown on Friday, features both classical choral works and jaunty movie and show tunes.

Entitled ‘Diamonds … Musical gems spanning three centuries’, the concert also features two talented young Dunedin musicians.

There’s multilingual soprano Cathy Highton-Sim, who’s performed and taught overseas, who’ll show her versatility by singing Mozart as well as Rodgers and Hart numbers.

And there’s award-winning composer and Dunedin Concerto Competition finalist, pianist Cameron Monteath, who’ll play Debussy’s Reflets dans l’eau.

Wānaka-based chamber music group, Aspiring Quartet, will play two movements of Schubert’s Piano Trout Quintet.

Also performing those movie and show tunes will be veteran local drummer Peter Doyle, local-based pianist Alison Frude and Aspiring Quartet and Dunedin Symphony Orchestra double bassist Kate Lovell.

Richard Madden’s again conducting the choir, who’ll sing both a capella and accompanied by Frude.

The first half concludes with the sparkling Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend, and the finale is the showstopper, Love is a Many-Splendored Thing.

Diamonds … Musical gems spanning three centuries, Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall, Friday, May 12, 7.30pm. Tickets, $30 from choir members, Queenstown’s Wilkinson’s Pharmacy, Frankton’s Summerfield’s Pharmacy and Arrowtown’s Lakes District Museum, students free
