With his scheduled concert tonight with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra cancelled, impressive Kiwi violinist Benjamin Baker is playing at Arrowtown jeweller Michael Hill’s Lodge at The Hills instead.
London-based Baker, who’s stringing together a distinguished CV as a soloist and chamber musician in recent years, is well known to Hill — he came third in the Michael Hill International Violin Competition in 2017.
He says tonight’s programme will be ‘‘built out of pieces that have inspired me, and some of my favourites’’.
‘‘I hope, through some of these special pieces by Bach, Ysaye, Kreisler, Reena Esmail and Helena Winkelman, it will bring some solace and respite from the challenges of life we are all facing at the moment.’’
Last month, he and Upper Clutha-based Justine Cormack fulfilled their dream by putting on a classical music event, At the World’s Edge Festival, featuring concerts in Wānaka, Cromwell and Queenstown.
Benjamin Baker concert, Lodge at The Hills, tomorrow 7pm. Tickets $65 from eventbrite.co.nz
