Costume pop-up for the ages

Clothing from every era since the 1920s is for sale at an Arrowtown pop-up beside The Fork & Tap pub.

The items — literally thousands — have been accumulated by Queenstown Costume Hire since it opened about 35 years ago.

Current owner Allie Blair-Hourston, who took over in 2006, had originally hoped to sell the business, but couldn’t find a buyer.

She’s organising the pop-up — running for about 10 days from 9am-5pm — as she’s leaving Arrowtown after 22 years and heading, initially, to Great Barrier Island.

She thinks the sale will appeal to those who’ve hired costumes over the years and told her they wished they could have kept them — ‘‘it happens so many times’’.

Blair-Hourston says the timing’s also good for those looking for Halloween costumes.

‘‘There’s also a lot of vintage which is super-popular with the young ones.’’

What she doesn’t sell she’ll donate to Queenstown Hospice Shop.
