Nationally-ranked Scrabble player Tara Hurley (left), of Queenstown, has picked up two gongs at the 41st national championships in Hamilton.

Playing at the three-day tournament in Hamilton over Queen’s Birthday weekend, Hurley not only won her grade with two games to spare, but picked up the trophy for the biggest rating improvement since the last national champs, held pre-Covid, in 2019.

She and fellow resort resident, Malcolm Graham, are the only two nationally-ranked players in Central Otago.

Hurley’s ranked 116th and Graham 111th.
