Wakatipu High student Sammy Fookes is pictured running her way to sensationally capture the New Zealand secondary schools’ junior girls’ 800 metres title in Tauranga last weekend.
After scattering the field with a first lap of 63 seconds, the 15-year-old ‘‘showed magnificent strength to maintain that lead to the tape and win by a two-second margin,’’ school athletics coach Neville Britton says.
Sammy earlier notched up conservative wins in her heat and semi-final.
Other Wakatipu High students at the event were distance runners Jude Deaker, Aleks Cheifetz, Louie Conway and Sammy’s younger sister Abby, and jumpers Jackson Rodgers and Elianna Collins.
