The Wakatipu women’s rugby side illustrated their huge progress this year by ending their season with their first victory, beating Gore’s Pioneer 22-10 at the Queenstown Rec Ground last Sunday.

Pictured showing her prowess in that game is second-five Jenna Jones.

Coach Grant Scannell says he’s delighted with his side’s improvement, considering 65% of them had never played rugby before, and the Southland comp had gone from 10-a-side to 15-a-side.

Numbers grew from about 16 at the start of the season to 29, which Scannell attributes to the side’s culture.

‘‘I said we wanted a really good culture to carry us through to next year and we’ve done that, so I’d say we’ll be a force to be reckoned with.’’

Meantime, a meeting’s being held in Cromwell on July 27 to discuss the possible formation of a Central Otago league.
