A Wakatipu Rugby Club stalwart’s been recognised for more than 35 years’ ‘‘outstanding’’ commitment and service.
Former president Phil Wilson, who’s been active in coaching, managing and administration, was made a life member of the club during a recent after-match ceremony — just the 13th in the club’s 69-year history.
He took on coaching and managing as his three sons worked their way through junior ranks up to Premiers teams.
Presenting the citation, club personality Brad Patterson stated: ‘‘He is extremely well known for his passion for the club and the resonating boom of ‘C’mon Waka!’ from the balcony.
‘‘He is also well known for some of the best collection box takes in the club’s history.
‘‘As a proud Wakatipu club man, I know there was almost a family intervention when his
daughter Amy decided to become president of the Arrowtown Rugby Club while he was the
serving president of the Wakatipu Rugby Club.’’
After receiving his blazer from another life member, Russell Excell, Wilson, struggling to contain his emotions, said ‘‘I’m obviously blown away’’.
‘‘This is the best club or organisation or anything I’ve ever had anything to do with, it’s a wonderful club.
‘‘I just feel so honoured to have this privilege to wear this blazer.’’
