Wakatipu High’s Rory Meek tears down Queenstown’s Coronet Peak for the fastest downhill time at last weekend’s first round of the Otago/Southland schools’ mountain biking champs.
Rory, who won the under-16 boys’ category, was just a whisker faster than school compatriot Ben Blewitt, who narrowly beat Wakatipu High’s Josh Bonner in the open boys’ category.
From Remarkables Primary, Noah White and Jessica McCaw won the U14 boys’ and girls’ titles, respectively.
In Sunday’s cross country, Wakatipu High’s Zara Mackley took out the open girls’ title.
Corone Peak ski area manager Nigel Kerr says though the field was decimated by Covid, “the racing was to a very high standard, and there is no doubt we’ll see several of these riders on the international circuit in years to come”.
“Feedback from riders and parents was they were stoked to have a race at all.”
