Former world rally champ Hayden Paddon’s new electric-powered Hyundai rally car (above)
was a surprise starter at the Queenstown Car Club’s 49th Coronet Peak Hill Climb, held initially in freezing conditions recently.

Cromwell-based Paddon, who brought his own generator, placed third behind winner Mark Higgins and runner-up Stefan Rust, who both drove Mitsubishi Evos.

Altogether 53 drivers took on the 2.7km course up the top part of Coronet Peak Road.
