Queenstown’s Fight Science hosted an inter-club sparring event last Saturday to hone the skills of mostly novice fighters.

Eighteen bouts were held — 15 Muay Thai and three boxing — with many fighters coming from out of town.

Organiser and Fight Science head coach Rob Horrocks is pictured, centre, with local Muay Thai fighter Aiden Dolan, left, and Invercargill’s Jon Madoc, who took part in both Muay Thai and boxing bouts.

Horrocks says the bouts were a stepping stone ‘‘between sparring in the gym against your teammates and going and fighting in a proper, scored show’’.

‘‘It was good [for fighters] to practise some of the skills under pressure with people watching them.

‘‘Because the bouts weren’t scored, they were a little more free to try any thing, there’s not big consequences.’’
