A planned community rally in Queenstown tomorrow’s been canned.

Resident and business owner Lou McDowell, who was organising the rally planned for tomorrow morning, says in part the decision to pull the pin is because Tourism Minister Stuart Nash – who’s in Queenstown tomorrow – declined an invitation to attend.

However, Radio New Zealand this morning reported a trans-Tasman bubble could be open by the end of next month.

McDowell says that’s the “beginning of a plan” and the start of the Whakatipu community getting back on its feet.

“The overwhelming support we have had in voicing a community in crisis, we feel, has added to the pressure of this recent announcement.”
Southland MP Joseph Mooney was informed late yesterday afternoon Nash wouldn’t be attending the rally – McDowell says while he was “very disappointed” about that, he acknowledged and applauded the community for its support of the rally.
