Work incident: The toppled drill rig below the Skyline gondola

By GUY WILLIAMS

Skyline Enterprises is investigating an incident in which a drill rig toppled over while carrying out stabilisation work on rocky bluffs beneath the Skyline gondola line in Queenstown on March 4.

The company’s group health and safety manager Matt Jenkinson confirms no one was injured in the incident, which he says happened when ground gave way beneath the rig as it was being repositioned.

‘‘The operator realised it was unstable to the point where he wasn’t going to be able to recover it … so he shut the engine off and stepped away from it, and it kind of slowly tipped over on to its side,’’ Jenkinson says.

The incident occurred in a secure work site, near the gondola’s bottom station, where there were no members of the public or Skyline guests at risk.

The other worker on the site, an excavator driver, was not at risk.

WorkSafe has been notified, and the company’s working through its normal incident investigation process, he says.
