Thousands of wine bottle tops collected in Queenstown are going to help provide dialysis for Kiwi kids.

Long-time Queenstowner Leigh Blackford says he was approached by a friend at the end of last year, who told him the local Lions Club collects bottle tops, which are then donated to Kidney Kids.

Each one goes towards helping provide dialysis for children, a routine procedure for people who have acute or chronic kidney failure.

Blackford started collecting bottle tops around the beginning of February — by last week he had 14 full boxes ready for collection.

‘‘It takes up a lot of garage space,’’ he laughs.

Blackford’s been given a helping hand by Wolf Hospitality Group, which operates six bars and restaurants around Queenstown, with staff saving the caps for him to pick up.

Now the boxes have been donated, Blackford says he needs ‘‘to find a new project’’, but is keen to continue the bottle top collection.

Queenstown Lions Club president Michael White says the club receives four or five boxes every month, mainly through the dropoff point at ACL Communications in Frankton.

The Lions also collect can tabs to be melted down and repurposed into frames for reading glasses.

White says it’s ‘‘always great’’ to get donations, no matter the size, particularly around Christmas.
