A new climbing tower at Arrowtown School has sent ripples of excitement through the playground.

Pictured on the double-masted climbing net last Wednesday are, from top, Holly Johnston, Grace Hide and Ava Pienaar, all 9, Alice Hutton, 11 and Pippa Julian, 10.

Plans for the tower started early last year, and principal Chris Bryant says anticipation’s been building for kids to clamber on it.

‘‘It really gives kids the opportunity to develop confidence, their upper body strength, team playing, and it’s accessible to the community as well, which is really cool.’’

Imported from Germany, the tower’s been a community effort, funded by Central Lakes Trust, Community Trust South, NZ Community Trust, Wakatipu Community Foundation, and the school’s PTA, with parents helping prep the site for installation.

An official opening will be held soon.
