Coming together

A panel discussion in Queenstown tomorrow night discusses depression and anxiety from the perspective of different faiths and cultures.

Promoted as the resort’s ‘‘first-ever interfaith/intercultural dialogue’’, ‘Panel of Care & Compassion’ brings together representatives from
Christian, Muslim and Maori organisations, along with psychotherapist Elizabeth Denton.

They’ll discuss ‘‘the difficulties many of us face in the realm of depression, anxiety, loneliness and other pressures of the modern age’’.

Being held at the Events Centre, from 6 till 8pm, the event’s being facilitated by Queenstown’s Maz Islamic Education Centre.

The organiser’s Sheikh Soner Coruhlu (pictured), from Sydney-based Sacred Outreach, which specialises in promoting understanding between people of different faiths and cultural backgrounds.

The discussion’s being MC’ed by the council’s welcoming communities coordinator, Silvia Dancose, and is being partly funded by Te Hau Toka Southern Lakes Wellbeing Group.

The Christian and Māori reps, respectively, are Emeritus Bishop Colin Campbell and local Hud Rapata.

There’ll be a 30-minute Q&A after the panel discussion.

More than 110 people have confirmed they’ll attend — invited guests include mayor Glyn Lewers.
