An Afghan refugee who’s just authored a book on his remarkable life gives a talk at Queenstown’s Remarkables Primary School hall this coming Tuesday, from 6pm.

Twenty years ago, as a seven-year-old, Abbas Nazari (above) and his family escaped the Taliban.

Their sinking boat, off Indonesia, was rescued by the Norwegian container ship, Tampa, which was refused entry by Australia, but they and 130-plus other refugees were allowed into NZ.

Abbas’ book, After the Tampa, tells this story, and his subsequent journey to becoming a Fulbright scholar — he recently returned from two years’ study in Washington, D.C.

Organised by Cromwell Paper Plus, 100 tickets are available, from eventfinda.
