Earnslaw lake steamer turns 99

The grand old Lady of the Lake celebrates her 99th birthday tomorrow (Tuesday) with a tranquil cruise.

Vintage steamer TSS Earnslaw has been gliding up and down Lake Wakatipu since her maiden voyage in 1912.

Launched in the same year as Titanic, over the intervening decades she has carried thousands of passengers – including Queen Elizabeth II.

Now the sole remaining passenger coal-fired steamship in the southern hemisphere, she still works 14-hour days despite her age.

The birthday cruise is for locals aged over 60 and costs $10. It departs Steamer Wharf at 10am. Anyone older than the Earnslaw can go on the cruise for free.
