Dotcom, drama, and those we lost


It’s the end of 2018, and we thought we’d take a look back at the most-read Mountain Scene online stories of the year.

  1. Tributes flow for rafting legend

Queenstowners were deeply affected by the death of local rafting legend Moana-Roa ‘Chief’ Haare in March. ‘Chief’, 62, collapsed and was unable to be resuscitated after his raft overturned on Shotover River.

2. Gone too soon

The resort lost another local identity in August, with the death of video and TV pioneer Pete Townsend. Universally known as ‘P.T.’, the devoted husband and family man was also a successful accommodation operator in more recent years.

3. Baby bumped

News of PM Jacinda Ardern’s pregnancy prompted employment advocate David Buckingham to go public in January with claims women being fired for getting pregnant was Queenstown’s “dirty little secret”.

4. Heli-pad spat

Then newly-settled Queenstown billionaire Tim Roberts ruffled feathers in April by proposing to make up to 20 chopper flights a month to and from his rural pad. A hearing on the proposal in October was adjourned.

5. Dotcom dishes on Queenstown life

Controversial internet magnate and sometimes-DJ Kim Dotcom sat down in May for an exclusive chat with Mountain Scene about his new life in Queenstown with wife Liz.
